Learn MoreReading the Top of a Los Angeles Chimney
From Van Nuys, Los Angeles proper starts over the Sepulveda and Cahuenga passes. The job is the one we do at home: get on the roof, photograph the crown, joints and flashing, explain the build, then fix what failed. A 1920s duplex stack and a hillside post-and-beam chimney need different brick and mortar, and we bring the right ones. Hillside stacks catch more wind and sun at the top, and many sit in high fire hazard zones. We plan for steep driveways and tight street parking, and fit the repair to the stack instead of one method for every house.
The Crown
Older central-city stacks often have a crown that is just a mortar wash. We replace it with a cast crown that sheds water past the brick.
Joints and Flashing
Prewar brick laid in soft lime mortar needs a soft repointing mortar. Hard cement mortar on old brick cracks the brick face, so we never use it there.
Above the Roofline
Hillside chimneys shaken in 1971 and 1994 often have a loose top. We relay those courses on sound brick and reflash the roof joint.
Booked Alongside
Los Angeles roof visits often share a day with Hollywood, Silver Lake, Los Feliz.
Before Any Repair
Tell us what you see on top of your Los Angeles chimney.
A cracked crown, a stain beside the stack, brick that looks out of line. That is enough for us to plan the roof visit, and we explain the build before we quote.
