We look at every stack on the property, because one can have a sound crown while the one beside it has split. Long hot summers are hard on crowns poured flat with no overhang. Water then runs straight down the face and into the joints. A crown cast with a slope and a drip edge stops that, and sometimes it is the whole repair.
The Crown
Many Encino crowns were troweled flat and flush with the brick. We repour them with a slope and an overhang so water drips clear of the face.

Where water has run down the face for a long time, the joints below the crown wash out. We repoint those courses and check the rest by hand.
