Why We Start on the Roof
Van Nuys was founded in 1911 and joined Los Angeles in 1915, and the brick chimneys on its blocks, like those across the Valley, have spent decades in summer heat and winter rain. The January 1994 Northridge earthquake was centred a few miles west, near Reseda. Much of what that did to a chimney shows at the top of the stack.
The top is where a chimney fails first. A crown cracks and lets water into the brick below it. Joints near the cap soften and open. Flashing pulls away where the stack meets the roof, and a ceiling stain appears in a room nowhere near the fireplace. Above the roofline, a few courses can shift enough to need relaying.
