Gas Fireplace Replacement in Van Nuys

Gas fireplace replacement in Van Nuys, from the roof down

If your gas unit is failing and you are pricing a gas fireplace replacement in Van Nuys, here is the straight version. The new gas unit goes into your existing masonry firebox as an insert, with a new liner and venting, and a gas line connection. The price depends on the unit, the flue and the shape the chimney is in.

Wilson & Son is a masonry crew first. That means we look at the whole chimney before we quote a unit: the firebox, the flue and the stack above the roof. A new gas insert is only as good as the chimney it vents through, and we want you to know that before you spend.

Ask for a written quote and we will book a roof-level look and a firebox check.

What sets the price

We do not print a flat number, because a replacement is built from parts that change house to house. Here is what moves the figure.

  • - The unit. Size, flame style, heat output and trim change the cost of the appliance itself.
  • The flue. The liner is sized to the flue it runs through, and a taller or more awkward run costs more.
  • The gas line. A line close to the hearth is a short job. A line that must be brought in from further away is a longer one.
  • The stack above the roof. If the crown is cracked or the top courses are loose, that gets repaired so the new venting finishes on sound masonry.
  • The opening. Trim, a new face or a changed hearth edge add scope.

The quote lists each part separately. You can see what the unit costs, what the venting costs and what any masonry repair costs, and you can decide on each.

How we look at the chimney first

Before we talk units, we climb up. We photograph every face of the stack from the roof, the crown and the flashing. Then we walk you through how the chimney is built and which part, if any, has let go.

That walk-through is the difference between a quote that holds and one that grows. A liner and a vent cap are fitted to the top of the stack. If the top is cracked, the new parts sit on a failing base. We tell you before the unit is ordered.

Sherman Oaks, the first city south of our Van Nuys base, shows the point. Flat mortar crowns there crack in the summer heat, and hillside stacks above steep roofs can carry loose top courses from the 1994 quake. A hairline crack gets sealed. A crown cracked through gets repoured with a slope and an overhang. Loose courses are taken down to sound brick and relaid, matched to the stack below. We do the same on any stack where a new unit is going in.

Book the roof-level look and we will photograph the stack before the quote is written.

The firebox and the unit

Inside, the work is a fit check. We confirm the existing masonry firebox can take the insert you want, then size the liner and the venting to match. The gas line is connected for the new unit, and the manufacturer's paperwork is left with you.

If the firebox is cracked or the damper area is worn, those get a line on the quote. We name the smallest repair that fixes the failure, not the biggest one that sells.

Replace, repair or convert

Not every failing gas unit needs replacing. We say so when it does not.

  • - If a part has failed and the unit is sound, the right job is a repair.
  • If the unit has worn out and the firebox is sound, an insert replaces it.
  • If the old open hearth is the problem, an insert converts it to gas.
  • If the chimney is failing above the roof, the masonry comes first.

You are never told the biggest job is the only job. When we recommend a replacement, we show the reason in the photos.

Choosing who replaces it

  • - Does the company look at the stack above the roof, or only at the fireplace?
  • Does the quote name the unit, the liner, the venting and the gas line separately?
  • Are the manufacturer's papers handed over?
  • Will they explain how the chimney is built before they quote?

Plain answers to these tell you the crew knows masonry. A company that only changes boxes may miss what is happening above your roof.

What to have ready when you call

  • - The address in Van Nuys or the nearby Valley neighborhoods.
  • What the current unit does, or fails to do.
  • A photo of the fireplace and, if you can get one, the chimney from the yard.
  • The brand and model on the label of the current unit, if it has one.
